Cranial Crutiate
Ligament Injury

Understanding CCL Injuries

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries are a common cause of hind-leg limping in dogs. When this ligament tears, the knee becomes unstable and painful. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can restore joint stability and help your dog return to normal activity.

01

What Is a Cranial Cruciate Ligament Injury?

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) stabilizes the knee joint in dogs, preventing the tibia from moving forward relative to the femur. When this ligament partially or completely tears, the knee becomes unstable and painful.

CCL injuries are one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs and often lead to limping, inflammation, and progressive arthritis if left untreated.

02

Signs Your Dog May Have a CCL Injury

Dogs with a cranial cruciate ligament injury may show:

• Sudden or gradual limping in the back leg
• Difficulty standing or rising
• Reduced activity or reluctance to run or jump
• Stiffness after rest
• Swelling around the knee joint

Early diagnosis is important to reduce pain and prevent long-term joint damage.
